Basic cable modem
troubleshooting:
- Check for which lights are lit on the front of the cable modem.
- If no POWER light: Check to be sure power cable is connected
to AC outlet and power connection is secure on the back of
the cable modem.
- If no CABLE light: Be sure incoming cable line is connected and
tightened (do not overtighten) on the back of the cable modem.
- If no PC light: Be sure the Ethernet connection or USB connection
between cable modem and PC is properly connected and PC is
powered on to normal operating system desktop.
- After checking all of the above:
- If no POWER light: Be sure AC outlet is not on a switched circuit,
or plugged into a power strip that has been turned off.
- If no CABLE light: Be sure that the connector is properly installed
on the coaxial cable. The connector should be snug and not
easily pulled off the coaxial wire. Also, the connector should
be a threaded type. Not a push-on connector.
- Check for splitters in the line. Bypass the splitter if possible and
connect the incoming coaxial cable line directly to the cable
modem.
- Check for in-line amplifiers. Bypass the in-line amplifier and connect the incoming
coaxial cable line directly to the cable modem.
- If splitters or in-line amplifiers are suspected but cannot be found
contact the cable company and request a field visit.
- Can HBO be seen on cable channel 2? If no, contact the cable company
and request a field visit to check lines.
Checking IP Settings:
- When POWER, CABLE, AND PC lights are green the goal is to be sure that
the computer is getting a 10.2.xxx.xxx IP address.
- Using Windows 95/98 go to START > RUN > type winipcfg
and click OK.

- In the pull down box be sure the ETHERNET or USB adapter is highlighted
blue and click OK.

- An easier but less specific way of checking to see if you have a
10.2.xxx.xxx address is to click on Internet Explorer or Netscape
icon and if it loads the Cablelynx Welcome page, you have a 10.2.xxx.xxx
IP address.
If 10.xxx.xxx.xxx IP is not present.
- Right click, Network Neighborhood. You should see the following screen.
Look for your TCP/IP Ethernet or USB adapter. If the TCP/IP protocol
for your adapter is not found, you will need to add this.

- Click
Add… (A driver information database may be built)

- Use
the pull down slider bar to show the TCP/IP protocol item and
click it.

Once TCP/IP is installed,
or IF TCP/IP
is ALREADY INSTALLED.
- Highlight
TCP/IP for your Ethernet or USB adapter and click Properties (or
Double Click correct TCP/IP adapter)
- class="supportpage">Be
sure the IP Address tab page is set to Automatically Obtain IP
Address.
- Click
OK.
- Restart
Computer.
- Open
Internet Explorer or Netscape and you should be directed to the
Cablelynx Welcome page.
